The Jivin' Lindy Hoppers Are At It AgainRevised last: 31 November 1999
SWINGTIME!
January 27 - March 29, 2000The new interest in all things Swing is now developing into another dimension --the key missing one that the 1930's had in abundance -- performance swing on stage. Broadway has welcomed it back, Hollywood has made some token gestures but theatre stages throughout the USA will be the real testing ground. First out in front is the new 50 gig Swingtime! tour featuring the UK's award winning JIVIN' LINDY HOPPERS who have teamed up with a 10 piece US band THE NEW YORK ALL STARS led by Warren Vache.
The JLH, although having trained just about everyone else that's come out of the UK scene, has become something of an unknown quantity in the recent Swing Dance world circuit as their dedication to entertaining and inspiring audiences from the general public has led them in other directions. The US's recent double take on swing has changed all that. 1999 saw the JLH featured in a PBS special with the Boston Pops Orchestra and a one week's jet tour of the east coast with the same 85 piece band(!) in August. And there is a lot more in the pipeline.
Come and see how well they have put the instruction from their Lindy Hop mentors "Mama Lu" Parks, "Pepsi" Bethel, Frankie Manning, Norma Miller, "Dickie" Harris and George and "Sugar" Sullivan into practice. There are suggestions that stage and social versions of the Lindy are two entirely different species. But as many old timers recall, back in the 1930's, when the latest show or the tour finished they went straight back to the Savoy Ballroom, or wherever their "home" was, and continued swinging right out with their local folks as if they had never left. The JLH seeks to emulate the professional Lindy Hoppers of the first time round who spread the gospel of the Lindy all over the world and had millions energetically trying to copy them. In this respect the JLH want to build links with local swing fraternities all over the USA to build on the good work that's been accomplished so far.
The show will be two hours long, including an interval of about 20 minutes and will conclude, where local venues permit, with an opportunity for those who want to join the company on stage dancing to do so. Various styles of Lindy will be danced in the show along with the Shim Sham, Big Apple, One Man Dance and various other classics of the Swing Area. But as many of you will already know that it is not what you are dancing but the way you dance it that makes the difference. The JLH have been doing just this since they were founded in 1984 and as a full-time professional company since 1987. No other company on the road today comes anywhere near the number of performances they have now completed, and that in itself is the guarantee that this is not-to-be-missed Swing Dancing.
Please forward this gig list to anyone who is interested and please get in touch if you think there is any way we can work together to promote Swing Dance in your locality.
