You would be surprised at the number of top competitors among our customers. And many swing dance teachers purchase our videos to learn from the very best in the field. But many of our customers are beginners who just don't feel comfortable going out on the dance floor until they have had some practise at home. Some use the videos simultaneously with taking classes, other use them instead of classes because they can learn at their own pace, using the "fast forward" or "replay" as needed.
Where to start?
If you have never done partner dancing before, we recommend you start with the Stevens Sisters East Coast Swing/Jitterbug #1. They teach the basics of the most common style of swing you'll see on the dance floor today. You'll learn how to lead and follow, how to do some simple turns and move around the dance floor with style. If you know the basics, you might want to move on to their Intermediate level East Coast Swing/Jitterbug#2. If you click on these videos you will be able to see a list of steps so you can compare the beginner level with the intermediate level and choose which is best for you.
Lindy Hop, East Coast Swing, Jitterbug - Which is best?
East Coast Swing/Jitterbug are easiest to learn and most new dancers start there. As you get more advanced, you can add to your repetoire with Dips and Tricks, Fancy Footwork and Aerials, still using the same basic step. But at some point you may want to learn the Lindy Hop basics and learn all you can from masters Frankie Manning and Steven Mitchell.Savoy Style vs Hollywood Style?
There is no war here; these two styles of Lindy Hop are completely compatible and very similar; the difference is in the look. Frankie Manning and Steven Mitchell teach you Savoy Style, while Marcus Koch and Jonathan and Sylvia focus on Hollywood style. Which style you choose will probably be affected by what your friends are doing or what you have seen done best. Have you ever seen the magnificent Ryan Francois and Jenny dancing, or the Rhythm Hotshots? That is Savoy style. Erik and Sylvia, and Peter Loggins and Lisa are masters of Hollywood style.
